Do you ever get a buy so good that you almost feel guilty? It's rare for me but it happened this week. For almost a year, I've been casually looking for a deal on an air compressor for the new shop, 60 gal or so, at least 10 CFM and hoping for a deal on a used "commercial" unit rather than the big-box-store re-badged import du jour. I look at CL often and an ad popped up for a SpeedAire. The ad said it had issues, head gasket, maybe; bearing noises, not sure. The pics looked good, it was the kind of machine that should be worth repairing, so, based on their problem report, I took a chance and made a phone offer. The guy had to call 'corporate' to get approval. This is probably good for me, as the corporate folks are two time zones away and likely ready to get their guys back to work on important stuff. Couple hours he calls/says come get it. I did and I was surely surprised. Apparently this local shop had been trying to get approval to upgrade to a much larger unit, but corporate was dragging their feet.

After reporting issues with this machine, they got upgrade approval and a new monster IR compressor.

The "broken" SpeedAire was bolted to the IR's pallet, waiting with a forklift to load me up. They bought it from WW Grainger. It's three years old. It looks 100% brand new.

It is not actually broken.

At all.

It DID have a small leak due to the drain ****** being cracked.

I almost feel bad about buying this machine for 500.

I said "almost".

No bearing noises? They just made up some problems to get an upgrade?

That's what it looks like to me. It did have the leak on the drain pipe. Zero bearing noises, pump or motor. He told me that he thought someone had said the motor seemed a little noisy, maybe bearings....

Somebody was fishing is all I can guess. It has no bearing noise.
The whole machine is much quieter than my (ancient and worn slap-*** out) 2hp Craftsman roller.

You shined it up for the pictures. You should look ashamed, but only for a second. Haha;)

I couldn't find a speck to wipe off it! That first pic above is as it was loaded on my truck...shining like a new penny. They said it had a coating of sawdust and they rinsed it off. I guess sawdust is a pretty good protectant!

You definitely scored, I've been looking as well. Mine hasn't died yet, but I'm expecting it. I bought mine when I first opened my auto repair shop in 1985-ish, I was broke and bought the cheapest POS I could find. It's one of the pretend 5hp single stage units. The Chinese motor cooked about 3 months into it's life and I replaced it with a Leeson. Damn thing's been working ever since. (KNOCKING ON WOOD) I think I got my moneys worth.

I had my CL deal last month. I got a "free" 2002 25 hp Mercury outboard motor. I got the motor cheap and sold my original antique Mercury for the same money.

:D Ya, you gotta love it when the 'stars align', cuz they don't do that often.

That's a great deal for 5 bills! I must concur with the other 'You ****' judges.

Now quit screwing around and get that thing bolted to the floor...last thing you want is a 'You ****' turning into an 'Oh F*$&!!!!' :scared:

we had a nice unit at our old shop, when the shop moved they offered it for free. one of the older guys at the time wanted it so he got first dibs. turns out the ******* just wanted it because he had a buyer.

Wow that's like a $4,000 unit when new. You suckety **** **** ****.

WWG catalog price on the SpeedAire that replaced it is ~$1700.00. Discounted pricing like for my school district is under $1600.00.

He still got a steal...

After working for "corporate" and knowing how they piss money away, I'd have a hard time feeling guilty. Besides, it's a write off for them and it must of not been big enough to handle their shop.

Nice --- it's 2k+ to get into the 1725 speed units.

Thanks for mentioning that point as I was getting confused looking at the various "equivalent" machines with vastly different prices. I couldn't spot the difference between them in the specs because motor RPM is not listed. It IS really important, though, for bearing and motor life but mostly for *noise*.

Apparently that's the key to the price range. I found a WWG page that shows $2371 originally https://m.grainger.com/mobile/product/alternate/4XA59

Great deal. Several years ago I bought an 80 gallon Husky with a couple hours on it, guy changed his mind about getting bodywork as a hobby. Mint condition, oil still looked like new. $300.00 is all he wanted.

I got a similar deal a couple years ago.

I was looking for a used Skyhook for use around my shop, hoisting heavy vises and lathe chucks, etc., to save wear and tear on my back.

I found this Skyhook and cart on Craigslist about a 2-hour drive away. A facility had purchased several of them, and one sat un-used for a long time. They decided to sell it.

They retail for $2400, I bought it, the cart and the counter weights, basically all brand new, for $400.
