Hello, About three months ago I installed a free standing air tight wood heater. The stove works good however,,, it could be better. It heats the garage but the draft is not what it should be. I have the double wall 6 inch pipe and it is extending well over 4 foot from the edge of the roof. What I find is that the stove pipe outside is barely warm.Inside the pipe is hot.So, without spend $79 for each two foot length, (I have 6 foot total) my question is,how can I insulate the outside of the stove pipe to help keep it hot?Any suggestions? Thank, Ken

If the pipe was hot on the outside it might need to be insulated but since it cool the heat from the inside pipe isn't transferring to the outer pipe. Do you have a hip roof ? Flue needs to be higher than the peak of the roof.

What is the total length of your chimney?

Are you venting horizontal?

Can you post a pic of the setup?

I have 6" Durant dvl, a double insulated pipe. Indoor pipe gets hot to the touch, but if I go up to the unheated attic (I supposed roof too) the outside pipe is cool. This is with no smoke and visible heat out the top. IIRC I have 12' straight pipe outside and over 14' total.

12' is min I think, and you need to be 3' above any nearby obsteuction for proper draft.

I'd venture to say it's colder outside because it's colder outside,in effect, it's cooling the outer pipe down.

If you're having trouble with a draft, like mentioned, how much horizontal run do you have and compared to vertical run ?

Do it have an automatic damper control ? Where do you have it set ? Is it set correctly ? Mine has loosened up before and needed adjusted.

For shits & giggles, do you know for sure the pipe is clear ? is it clogged and need cleaned ?

Post pics.

The stove pipe outside of the building should be cold/cool. If you have two 90* bends in the pipe there is where your problem is. Post pics so people know what your talking about.
