Will the big blue wire nuts from home depot work with 3 #8 wire? It says max 2 #6 but not sure if it will be ok with 3 8's. Anyone have any insight?

A regular Ideal Blue Wingnut like the ones they sell at Home Depot

This is much better then a split bolt.

split bolt is always better than a wire nut excluding install time

Any time you get below #8, it's time to start thinking split bolt.

They do make some good wire nuts made for what you want, the pic above is not one of them.

When working with stranded THHN, wire nuts do work well is installed properly. But for 8 and larger? I'd never go more than 2 wires under that nut. Your big problem is getting good contact on all wires.

If you pull up the manfg specs, they will tell you have many wires of each size it's rated for. If there is no UL rating for them....return them.

I'll put two #6 stranded together with a wire nut. I use split bolts for ground connections. Polaris lugs FTW elsewhere.

Agreed, the wire nuts pictured are not that great.

Anyway, you're right, the manufacturer's specs will list EVERY possibly allowed configuration of wires for that specific nut. Look in the chart, and if it allows for three #8, the go ahead. If not, then stop right there.

Doubt that a split bolt is listed for more than 2 conductors, Polaris connectors or their competitors products are great.

Use split bolts instead, wrap with rubber tape then super 33.;)

The split bolt is pretty much a thing of the past. The Polaris Connectors have taken the place of them. They don't require insulation, don't need to be taped, and the installation saves some real labor costs.
The real ***** is when you go to take the tape off the split bolts, it leave a sticky mess. :Homer:

Do you still carry a soldering iron with you to solder and then tape wires together?

I still solder lots of wires,is there a problem with that too?:dunno::lol:
Put the 1st wrap of super 33 on backwards/then rubber then 33 the regular way.
Putting the first wrap on backwards keeps tape from sticking after you slice it with a utilitie knife, then just peel it off.;)

As long as you still have some friction tape left it's OK, I guess. LMAO!

Unfortunately, the trick with the backwards tape as the first wrap isn't practiced by everyone.

:argue:

What in the world is that mess?:lol_hitti
Next time I go to solder up a bunch of wires Ill take a picture of a slightly better job than that.

How much space does a Polaris burn up inside of a junction box compared to a split bolt?;)

While the split bolted connection itself is SLIGHTLY smaller than a Polaris, once you've added sufficient tape to the split bolt, the Polaris takes up less space in the box.
