As I understand it, there is no clear code when it comes to manufacturing wire nuts as far as color coding and such. Is there a way to sort wire nuts by size if the color code does not exist?

Virtually all the wire nuts that I use are color coded, and there is a standard even if it is not followed well sometimes. Also most wire nuts will be marked on the end as to the gauge and number of wires allowed, though if you are older, you may need a magnifying glass to read them (and good light).

Yellows ****, huh?

Yes they do. No one in our shop likes or uses yellows. Tans and reds probably cover 99% of our needs when we're using wirenuts.

Tans seem to grab and bite onto the wire 10 times better than yellows. I can't count how many times I've tried to use a yellow just to have it spin on the ends of the wires I'm trying to splice. Grab a tan and it goes right on and tightens up.

even the 3M 312's(yellow)? I wouldn't use anything else if I'm splicing 3 or less #12s, more and i use the 3M 512(red).

Elroy isn't exactly a conosur on wire nuts but he would imagine that if the nut was U/L listed and the combination of wire you were joining was a listed. Well you're golden

not all ways elroy. we get the ideals orange, yellow, reds, and blues. i have had problems with all them spinning off. i just throw the bad one down and grab another and it works. i have had the metal part on the orange ones come out. hell its the luck of the draw. but if it is not 3M or ideal they just ****

I am not afraid of yellow wire nuts. The stuff I do at work is all crimps, which are color coded. But when I used to work in the trades or when putzing around the house I use yellow and reds.

Never really worried about a code for which wire nut to use. I always thought you code just tell by the size or what you were nutting.

The used to be all black, now electricians are to much of panzies to to turn a barrel nut. Ha.
