I bought a used Mitsubishi (MUZ-GE18na). I have lined up a local HYVAC guy to charge the system. The installation manual I got online seems to say to use 14 gauge wire on a 220volt breaker. Can I use 12/2 with ground on a 15 amp 220 volt breaker to run this unit or am I missing something?

You can use 14/2 & a 15A 2 pole breaker if you wish, as it's already had the 125% done by the manufacturer. But as a side note I don't like 14 AWG for anything except residential lighting & control wiring, so 12/2 is fine. BTW "220" is not a domestic voltage unless your in the 50 hertz world like Europe, China, Africa, for many decades it's been either 208 or 240 volts.

You can, and I recommend, running this circuit with 12 gauge instead of 14. The 14 can flow "up to" 15 amps and the 12 gauge "up to" 20 amps. There is no penalty for upsizing the wire and it will allow you to upsize the breaker in the event that you desire a larger heat pump in the future.
