Hey. Nothing against your post. My brain just wanted to see it written out in black and white with what I already purchased.
All good, just checking. This comes up a lot, so I think I've typed basically the same thing many times and it seems like it doesn't stick very well. Wondering if I need to approach it differently

You sure it's 30 amp?
Most hoists are ~2 hp, which is under 10 amps.
According to Bendpaks website they recommend a 30A breaker

What size circuit breaker does a lift's power unit require?

We recommend a 30 amp breaker for your car lift.

That does NOT mean the FLA on the motor is 30a. Breakers for motors need to be oversized to prevent nuissance tripping from in-rush current.

A 5HP motor has an FLA of around 23a and a 7.5HP is closer to 30a

your lift motor is probably around 2Hp

Sure, but that's not a 30 amp draw. If starting amperage was used for everything, houses would probably need 300 or 400 amp service.

Likely they recommend that to avoid any nuisance trips as the momentary starting draw is probably near that.

Still seems high, but that's just my 2 cents. 3hp is around 10 amps. A 20 amp breaker shouldn't trip.

Actually startup currents are 4x-8x FLA so the draw would be a lot higher tham the breaker rating but its only for 100ms or so and the breaker doesnt trip with such a short spike in current.

One of my clients has a 7.5Hp 3 phase air compressor with an 18a FLA. when i put my clamp meter on it and started it up, it drew close to 100a

Is there a thing as too much power?? Wouldn't you kick yourself in the **** if you outgrew your power supply someday?? Some things to think about. I called my power company when I ran the power out to my shop and they were more than happy to come out to my house and talk everything over and tell me exactly what I needed to purchase.

This is what I did, I really never thought of doing that till someone suggested it to me. They asked what are you going to have, well a lift and a compressor, never got the big compressor, lights, and normal stuff being used here and there, a saw, normal "hobby" car shop. Then there is a "normal" 40x60 pole barn that the equipment lives in, some lights in there, and battery tenders.

We got a 200A service and put 50 of it into the barn. Dumb *** me forgot to run a line for propane to the shop when the power was ran so I am using 50A of that for a big electric heater.

I am happy with the power in my shop.
