Wire Size Question and how to.

Im in the final stages of wiring my new shop and getting ready for the electrical inspection. I'm putting a small kitchen in the back corner in the near future. What size wire do I need to pull for the stove/oven? Will 8/3 be big enough? It's about a 45-50 foot pull. Since this is a future kitchen I don't have the appliance on hand to know the kw rating or amp draw. What's a good rule of thumb?

I'm also planning on putting in an air compressor on the other end of the shop. I'm looking at the 60 gallon 5 hp Ingersol/Rand. What size wire do I need to pull for it and how do I wire that up? Do those typically wire up with a plug or do you pull out of the wall and hard wire it?

And finally I want to put in a wall outlet for a welder for future use. Right now I don't weld and don't know much about welders but I want to be prepared just in case and I can easily see me doing some metal work in the fab work in the future. I'm assuming a small welder would run on 240? What size wire do you run for that and how do you wire it up? This will be about 10 feet from the panel.

I believe the newer Energy Star rated electric ranges require a 40 amp breaker so 8/3 would be fine.

The compressor should be fine on a 30A 240V circuit using #10/2, can be on plug or hard wired with a disconnect switch.

Welder circuit really depends on the welder size. I have a Clarke 180EN and use it on a 30A 240V plug/receptacle circuit.

Single phase motor branch circuit conductors must be based on Table 430.248. at 125% example 5 HP =28 amps X 1.25= 35 amps
Table 310.15(B)(16) will be used to select the conductor size. If using romex (NM cable) the 60 degree column would be used requiring a #8 copper conductor. You would use an 8/2 for a 240 volt connection.
The Over current protective device (Breaker) would be sized from table Table 430.52 You will be using an inverse time breaker, this column allows up to 250% of the full load current of the motor. example 28 amps X 2.50=70 amp breaker Max. However a 40 or 50 may be used the 70 amp is the Max. The compressor manual may tell you the recommended breaker size. When it comes to electric motors the breaker does not always correspond directly with the conductor size.

I personally would rough in a deep two gang j-box cap your conductors and install a blank cover. When you purchase the compressor you can make a direct connection or install a receptacle at that time. I prefer a direct connection with a section of flexible conduit or seal tight, Just a personal preference.

The welder would be 240 volt and at only 10 feet from the panel I would use #6 with a 50 amp receptacle and breaker. This would allow for a wide variety of welders. Many smaller welders can get by on #8 or less depending on the welder. Given the short distance I would go for the larger for future flexibility. You can hold off on purchasing the receptacle and the breaker until you score the welder. This way you dont waste a purchase on something you might change later. You can cap your wires and place a blank cover on the box.

I think you'll find that the IR 5hp compressor is not really a true 5hp. I have a so called 5hp 60 gal compressor and it pulls 22A and I run it on a 30A circuit.

Here is what I would do.

Range 50 amp 6/3 wire
Welder 50 Amp 6/2 wire (I used 6/3 so I wouldn't have to buy more than one roll)
compressor 30amp 10/2

Ranges have all went to 50amp for the most part. The ones I have installed need a 6/3 wire. It has easy to run wire now, but hard later.
