Wire storage

Anyone have a good example you can show of how you store wire while still keeping it ready to use? I’m referring to automotive type wire....12,14,16 ga wire in various colors.

I have a four tier wire spool rack mounted on the wall in a lightly traffic corner of my garage.

I keep all my spools in a drawer and pull out the one I need... but now that you showed me that link, I suddenly feel inadequate. I'm sure I could build something similar using rebar and some wood.

I think I have an empty Durham cabinet in the shop, I'll be copying that designfor sure, I like the idea of the terminals & wire in one cabinet

So far the Durham cabinet seems to be the best option. I’d like to bolt it to the wall. I already have a place for connectors so maybe I can do something else with the drawer. I really like how the wire feeds out the holes with the grommets.

I also don’t need to store that many wire rolls so maybe I’ll just make one.

I coil and tag my left over wire, with the length and gauge, and throw the coils into a box.

I coil up the short pieces and put each one in a ziplock bag. Then toss all the bags into a bin. I use this method to also organize a/v and computer cables. Bags with similar cables go together in larger bags.

I built this rack to hold all of the mid-size wire, 18 to 14ga. It can hang over the wiring bench or go out to the harness board as you see here.

It is made out of scrap lumber, some cardboard separators I cut out on the craft saw and a chunk of repurposed tent pole.

When it's not being used it is covered with an old towel.

I have a decent selection of wire in 8 different colors and in 18, 16, 14, & 10 gauge MTW wire in 250" rolls, and picked up an older automotive parts cabinet which I made some "J" hooks to accept lengths of conduit to hold the rolls. Placed a large flat washer between the rolls and flip floped the direction the wire comes off the spools so when you pull wire off a reel it don't unroll the other reels. The cabinet has a lot of room in the bottom for terminals, split loom, shrink tubing, just about any thing you would want/need to build/repair a wire loom, truck,trailer, or anything you want. Took years to accumulate and build this project but it sure is handy, just getting to old to fully use it.
