Wire type for old motors

I asked the question at the end of another thread. What kind of wire is used for the internal portion of these antique motors? Mine is circa 1948 on a model 100 craftsman drill press. I'm referring to the cloth like wiring and not the windings. I have not as yet seen any mention of repairing or replacing these wires. I have a supply of THHN wire. Is this wire appropriate for these motors? Or any motors?

It was recommended to me to use SRML wire for the motor leads. I was very happy with that decision due to the overall thickness and flexibility.

If you just want to replace the insulation, look for high temp fiberglass wire sheathing. It looks similar.

That SRML motor lead wire looks like good stuff. The insulated wire on my modern drill press motor appears to just be type MTW (Machine tool wire) wire which is rated for 105 degrees C..

MTW has a higher strand count than THHN making it more flexible and the insulation is rated for a higher temperature (105 vs 90 deg C).
