if its hitting the inside of the guards then you need to find a thinner wire wheel.
if its just a few pieces of wire then that's kinda normal. that hf grinder looks like its rather thin. my 8" craftsman came with a wire wheel and the space is rather wide.

Yeah, it's thin between the guards but you can buy a 1/2" wire wheel. In my mind a thin wheel like that is next to useless (but better than nothing, I suppose). You might take one end guard off and see if there's enough thread left to run a spacer on the inside with some of the wheel outside the circular guard.

Don't remove the plastic one of you'll get stabbed on your upper parts or worse!

Wear a full face shield with wire wheels. More than once I have pulled wires out of me that sunk into me about 1/2". I usually didn't even feel them going in and found them later. I was using a side grinder, not a bench, but one coming loose and hitting and eye could easily be blinding.

ok. HF sells wire wheels in steel and brass. They fit ok but nothing fits great on the HF bench grinder. They drag against the guards too badly. Their wire wheels do spread depending on how you use them. So I also tried taking the guards off my HF grinder. Only thing it helped really was the noise. My biggest issue is the HF grinder is definitely not powerful enough for a wire wheel. I mean you can clean some rust off say 10 bolts & nuts. You will be there for 40 mins letting it spin back up again. You think I'm exaggerating think again.

My wire wheel is now on 1/2 HP block grinder with no guards.

I need a wire wheel for my HF 8" 3/4hp bench grinder. I just picked up a Kobalt wire wheel, but the wire interferes with the guards. Anyone know what wire wheels fit on this grinder without interfering with the guards?

This is the grinder I have...

That grinder is too wimpy for wire wheels. Wire brushing takes lots of amps. HF's false HP rating is a lie.

If you still want to do it, get the thinnest wheel you can find and if you need to then add spaces to the inboard side of the wheel and spacers to extend the outer guard.

Don't use China made wire wheels they throw wire like a Porcupine! Also don't use one with a plastic center, I had one come apart at speed and thank fully it didn't do any damage, well almost marked my laundry though... lol
