Wire wheel on a 6" Craftsman bench grinder

I bought a wire wheel the other day for my 6" Craftsman bench grinder. I've been using this grinder for over 15 years for sharpening mower blades and it has worked well.

When I get the new wire wheel home, I see that the 5/8" to 1/2" "bushing" they refer to on the packaging, is just a little plastic ring. Not only that, but the method for mounting the grinding wheels in place (big cupped washers) won't hold the "bushing" in place. The bushing will fall into the cupped washer.

I went back to the store, and no one there could explain how I was supposed to mount this wire wheel.

I went to Home Depot and their wire wheels are all 5/8" holes, with the same little plastic bushing.

Can anyone describe how these wire wheels with "plastic bushing" is intended to mount.

I could make up a custom bushing on my lathe, but I shouldn't have to.

can't you just use a secondary flat washer on the inside to hold, or glue adapter into place? Sounds like a toothpick and dab of epoxy should do......... or return and get one w/ a fixed arbor hole.

seems like been seeing more of that w/ "universal" sizing (i.e., lawmower blades, etc.)

who makes a 1/2 arbor - all my shizit is 5/8.

Yea, mine is the same way. I cut a 1/2'' PVC male pipe thread off a barb fitting . Sanded it to fit, works well.

Very simple. Just place 1/2" I.D. washers inside the cup to keep the bushing in place.
