Wire wheeling garden tools

My wife is wrapping up her garden for the winter. She gives me her shears and pruners to clean and preserve until spring.

I usually lightly dress the edges with a stone and and then take them over to the grinder and knock the surface rust off with a extra fine wire wheel.

I then check the pivot bolts for play and tighten if necessary, wipe em down with Boeshield and put away.

I was wondering if I ought to reverse the order a little? Maybe the wire wheel is putting a burr on the dressed edge?

My freshly sharpened garden tools, axes, etc. get a spray of paint on the cutting edge for protection during winter in my shed.
Works for me.

Clean, wire wheel and/or flap disk, rust converter, sharpen, paint. It does not really take a lot of time if you are doing several. We use 5 shovels/spades, and 3 hoes

They are they better than new all next year.

I treated this shovel with Boiled Linseed Oil a year-and-a-half ago. It's been in that roof rack on my car through two summers and wet springs and one wet fall and snowy winter--and seen a fair amount of use as a shovel. Note only one small spot or rust on the top "ear" of the blade.

Oh, yeah, I'd sharpen after removing rust. But then, I don't have to remove rust on most of my personal landscape tools. Keeping 'em oiled and clean is easier than removing rust (and leaving pits) and cleaning them every season.

Clean, sharpen, light coating of grease.

Since doing it on my shears and loppers they stay nice looking for years.
