Was the lathe orginally wired for a three phase motor. If so, this switch may not handle the current load for the single phase. When I converterd my Rockwell over from three phase to single phase I used the switch to operate a reversing contactor for the motor.
Verify the contact current capacity first. If it will handle use your multi meter to ring out the various contacts and find the short.
