It should help a lot with the basic questions.

Near me, we have a discount store called Ollie's - it's the kind of store that buys overstock/old stock from larger chains then sells it at a discount.

They have a book section that is always full of the DIY-type books you find at the front of Home Depot/Lowes. HD/Lowes charges about $20-$25 for those books. Ollie's sells them for $3-$4. Last time I was there I picked up a Stanley-brand guide to wiring for $3. It's about 150 pages and full of great pictures and illustrations. I keep it around for reference.
