I have never used one, never even seen one. How do they work, how much they cost?

You probably have seen and used one, you just didn't realize it was wireless. Alot of them dont look any different than a traditional paddle style switch. There's many different approaches taken but there are two main methods.
A master switch is wired into a primary position as if it were just a normal switch. This switch will have some intelligence built into it. Once the master is powered up, a wireless companion switch can be paired with it. There can be many companions for one master, so you can have 3 way, 4 way, 5, 6, 7....way.
The companions can be stuck on the wall, put in your pocket, desk drawer, whatever.
A good master will cost around $60, and companions can be as cheap as $15.
Another method is using wifi communication between devices and switches. In commercial settings, wifi crashes too often for this to be used, but in residential it's normally OK.
You can lose your mind trying to sort out all of the differences. Be careful, the manufacturers try to hook you into using "their" system, and once you've started, you have to use all of their stuff.
Good luck,
