What kind of deaf are we talking about here, old age exaggerated deaf, or clinically, ears don't work deaf.

Either way, I believe there are door bells for the hearing impaired that involve a flashing light of some sort to alert that the bell has been rung.

I sold a surplus fire alarm strobe light/klxon to someone for this purpose.
It could be wired the either or both warnings.
They were going to use the strobe only.
The horn was just too loud.

I don't know how well it would work in your case, but I bought a wireless doorbell off of Amazon that is rather loud. And you can plug it in anywhere convenient. The button runs off of a 9V battery, and the receiver plugs into any wall outlet. So if you are in a part of a house like a back family room or something like that, you could plug it in right beside your favorite recliner. IIRC, it was only something like $21.

How about a dog? My doorbell rings and my dogs lets everyone in the house know!

Deaf guy I know uses a flashing light sort of dealy.

Punch in "flashing light doorbell" or "deaf doorbell" on Google and you'll find all sorts of devices for sale as well as instructions for converting standard doorbells with louder signals and strobes.

On a related note, I know a nearly deaf guy who has hearing aids that connect to his iPhone with Bluetooth. The phone vibrates and strobes the camera flash when he gets a call.

Anyway, there are also gadgets called "Smart Doorbells" (Skybell, Ring, and August are some brand names) that have a camera and a motion sensor and notify you via your phone in the same way when there's someone at the door. Even if you're somewhere else, you can see who's at the door, and some units have a microphone and a speaker that let you communicate to the visitor.

If said guy is not quite completely deaf and normally carries a smart phone, a smart doorbell could be a good option.

Teltex sells a multitude of handy devices for the hearing impaired. I set my dad up a system that alerts him of doorbells, smoke detector, CO2 detector and ringing phone. I have been thinking about getting him an alarm clock with a bed shaker.

Teltex online at www.teltex.com
