so we're putting our network together in the shop...considering going wireless...

the rep from the software co. said that there might be an issue with high freq. interference put off by the compressor motor...

we have one wireless ready unit in the office, one lready laptop in the shop and one desktop in...the same room as the compressor...

any experience, feedback, etc...?

Never heard that before, google didn't turn up anything. Wireless network and wireless phones I've heard of some interference, but thats about it.

I'd say get the newest protocol wireless base, and maybe look at upgraded directional or higher gain antennae.

I work in a major computer manufacturer and I have never heard of such of thing. In our manufacturing plants we have wireless along side of conveyor motors, compressor equipment, etc. Never heard of such problems.

Could he be making excuses in advance if he has a poor product?
Or does he not know his product that well?
Since he brought it up; Did he offer to find the answer fpr you?
I'd ask another manufacturer-If that's possible.

I am a network engineer, and have implemented quite a few wireless solutions. I currently work in a school district that has several wireless AP's in the bus garage for mechanics to use with their laptop which runs OBDII reader software. The only problem I have ever had is when a mechanic tries to access the network 3 bays away from the AP. (Which is 2 cinder block walls away) More of a rang issue than anything else.

The only time that I can think you might have a problem is if you are doing an extensive amount of welding. The RF noise from an arc welder would certainly be enough to cause interference.

Also, you stated that he was a "software rep." Generally software reps don't know anything other than the basics about the product they are selling/supporting. He is probably in no way qualified to make the statement he made.

We have a similar issue. It is worse when all of the buses are parked in the bays.

Can't you just try it? You already have some of the equipment. You can pick up a wireless router for $50 or less, or just borrow one from somebody for a couple of hours. Nothing like some real experience to answer the question. Or even better, get the rep to do it.

our shop is 35,000 sq/ft. We have 5 AP's down the center.

We run about 15-20 3 phase 10-50hp motors daily continuously. no problems. ever. come to think of it, one of the AP's is right next to the 120 gallon compressor.

We also had a 1,000 gallon tank connected to an IR 300HP Air Generator for a machine we made. No problem with that either, except for the heat, and the noise.

Just make sure you buy quality AP's and decent antennas and you'll be all set.

I doubt it will be a problem. I can connect to our home wireless network from the detached garage... router is in the front of the house more than 100feet away. It's very nice being able to look up stuff or order parts without having to leave the shop.

I think one of the only everyday things I have run across that would probably screw up your wireless network is a microwave oven. (only while it is running/cooking)

All your major Hgh dollar Dealerships have been using it for years without any problems, doing programing downloads all day long. But all other computers hard wired for speed and network size...H
