Wireless Internet to detatched garage

Hello all! I know many of you garage enthusiasts have detatched garage, in the same situation I am in. I would like to recieve the wifi signal I recieve in my house, in my detatched garage about 20 feet from my actuall modem in the basement. I am unfortunately unable to run ethernet cables from the house to the garage, and unable to move the modem to the main level of the house.
I am sure, many of you are in the same situation, if anyone could help, or know a thread that contains the information I need, that would be magnificent!

I use my WiFi in my detached garage.

My modem is about 50 linear feet from my shop, in my office in the house.

I use Verizon Fios and it works great!

I even make sure I run my WiFi connection on my iPhone when I'm working out there because I use it for my Pandora account for music.

First thing in offering advice it to make sure I understand the problem. You do have wireless in the house but it does not reach to the garage.

Your modem is in the basement and you say you can not move it upstairs. I assume you have a cable or dsl modem in the basement and that your in house wireless is there also.

If your wireless signal is good in the house but can not reach 20 feet to the shop then you must reposition your wireless access point/router. If your service provider gave you a dsl/cable combination modem/router/wireless router then that is one issue if you have 2 devices a modem and a wireless router that presents another solution.

You need to have a wireless access point/router upstairs in the mail living area then you should have no issue going 20 feet to the shop. If you have a separate modem wirelss then you need a longer cable between the modem and the wireless router. Simply buy or make a longer cable and place the wireless unit upstairs. It can be as simple as drilling a hole and running a wire.

It appears you have a wireless Router already. I have my router in the basement as well b/c it is finished. I get signal on the 2nd floor and out in the driveway. Check to see if you get signal already. You may consider a stronger Dual Band N Router or a signal repeater.

my garage is about 45 feet from I juust use a repeater in the kicthen window to throw it out to the garage

If you need to extend you can use WDS. In the orginal posters case he could install a 2nd wireless access point higher in the main house. That should provide enough signal to reach the garage. They also sell higher gain antennas. One last thing is you can up the signal on some routers by installing hacked firmware like WRT. Hope this helps.

I can see our SSID from the Linksys E3000 400' away in my daughter's driveway. The old shop work bench was 50' from the router through two stud walls and I had no trouble with signal out there.

No one says the antenna has to be in the basement.

Many wireless routers connect the antenna via a BNC connector. Run some RG-58 (not RG-59) upstairs and put a cheap antenna up there.

I read about a guy who lived in an apartment and wanted his wireless signal to reach to the park across the street. An antenna outside on his 5th floor balcony and the signal easily made it 500+ feet.

Oh, I forgot about this. It really works ! Tin Can Antenna

Just be careful you're not letting everyone else use your connection signal for their "undesirable internet activities"...

Doesn't it all come back to your computer address number?

Hmmm....maybe I misunderstood the OP's post. I read it as he would like the same house wifi in the garage, not that it didn't work from his house. I assumed he didn't have a wifi card in his garage pc and didn't understand what to get or how set it up. Maybe in my old age I take too many medications, my reading comprehension has gone to **** lately.

I just went through this with my own garage situation. At first the wireless router was in our basement and I couldn't get any signal out in the shop. I moved it upstairs to the porch looking directly across to the shop and this significantly improved matters but wasn't a perfect fix...I could get Wireless B (extremely slow) but not G or N. So I bought another G USB adapter through Amazon which had an external antenna plug, and also bought a high gain wireless antenna with 20' of included cord. Between the move of the wireless router upstairs and the revisions to the wireless adapter and antenna, I can get excellent signal from any point in the house and shop and have a max signal rate of around 80Mbps.

I was going to bury Cat6 when I did a power upgrade to the shop this summer, but after these changes I didn't see any need.

Taking the time to set up WPA2 on the router and systems will prevent that. And changing the default password on the router's admin access. You can also set routers to allow only certain MAC addresses to connect - but it's no problem to download a little program to change the MAC address on a laptop, so that's not much added security. A little is all it takes - almost no one would make the effort required to bust into a home connection. Why, when you can pretty easy find a business with a nubie wireless admin and poor security, or a local school with a deliberate open connection. They have more bandwidth anyway. Note - it is illegal to connect to someones private wireless, even if they are stupid with the setup.

I would check out Ubiquity networks devices like the Nanostation Loco or similar device. They are inexpensive, and get good reviews. You could mount it on your house outside and get coverage in you garage without a problem.
