OK, worked on 110 a bunch of times. 220 seems scarier so...help.

I have a 2 post lift with a 3 wire electric motor. I had an electrician rough in a 220 outlet in the ceiling when the house was built. This outlet has 2 romex wires in it. Looks like 2 standard 110 wires. Instructions how to terminate the motor in this 220 box?

Thanks for any help. Crayon drawings welcome. lol

The wires in the box should be 2 hots and a ground. Check them with a meter to be sure and to be sure they are not energized while you are working on them!

The lift instructions should tell you which wires to to the hots and which is the ground.

Some pictures of what you are working with would help greatly. Hopefully the electrician ran wire of the correct size for the load.

What is the outlet size/type #, such as NEMA 6-20 or 6-30 or L6-20 or L6-30? And what lift do you have?

Alright, I'll take some pics since I can't answer the questions. Bought the lift last year & no idea where I put the paperwork. Finally got the garage cleaned out to use & attempt to get it working.
Got a couple pics when it was installed:

Ok, cant post pics yet but got a couple pieces of info.

DURO brand 2 post.
208-240 volt
14.5-15amp

Wires coming from motor: 2 black, 1 green

Outlet is single orange romex. Thicker wire than standars 110. 4 wire. Red, white, black and copper.

My wire from motor to outlet is 12/3 in a spiral steel flex.

Thanks for the advice.

P.s. dedicated 20amp breaker.....switched off while I work

In the outlet box, the red and black should be your 2 hot legs, the white a neutral, and the bare copper is your ground. Your lift needs only the 2 hots and the ground.

Like wylies says, loot at the outlet and see what numbers are on it and then you will have to buy a matching male plug to put on the cable coming out of the lift so you can plug it in.

Ahhh, so I need to put a plug in the outlet, can't just hardwire it?

The outlet is just caped off (wire nuts) Romex. I have to add the female side I guess.

This is the wire from the motor & the other end in the ceiling is similar but with wire nuts on the romex.

Ahh, I thought you already had a plug installed. You can hardwire it in a junction box but you may need a disconnect to be code compliant depending on where the breaker panel is located.

In your case it would go red romex to black from the lift, Black romex to the other black from the lift, and bare copper romex to the green wire from the lift.

As stated, you only need the two hot leads and ground. So black to black, and red to black, doesn't matter which of the two black motor leads goes to the black or red from the source. The green ground from the motor goes to the bare wire from the source. White is not used can be left in box protected with wire nut.

I would just hardwire the motor, using Seal Tight conduit and proper fittings, available at big box stores.

Edit: Looks like GP beat me to it. I type slow!
