Hello everyone,

It's been a looong time since I've posted here and I knew that this was the best place to post this question. I'm wiring up a bead blaster (a $1,200 model I bought for $100!) and having some issues.

I have 110v coming in black, white & green.
I have a florescent fixture that also has a black, white & green.
Then there is an outlet that I plug the vacuum into and a single pole switch.

I brought all the greens together and grounded them. All the whites together. The black from the incoming cord goes to a nut for the light, then from the nut a ran another black to the switch and from the switch to the outlet.

I've attached a pic to show what I've got. I flip the switch and the light comes on. No problem, But the moment I plug in the vac, the circuit breaker pops.

DO I need a DPDT switch and do both the white and black? I know I managed to wire my entire shop to where it impressed the city code inspectors, but here I am stumped. It's not the amps because it a 20amp circuit and I can plug the vac into the same wall outlet as the light cord with no issues.

Help!

Gene S.

is the male plug on the unit molded on the cord or is it one someone installed? if the latter, have you verified its wired correctly?

Soon as you plug in, without turning on the vacuum? Bad vacuum cord, or plug is possible.

Turning on pops breaker? How many amps is the breaker?

Most trouble shooting starts with breaker on plug in one item at a time till the breaker trips. If the vacuum trips the breaker with out being turned on the vacuum is wired wrong.
If the breaker trips with the vacuum running, to small a breaker, check the load amperage on the vacuum name plate. If the breaker is rated high enough to carry the load of the vacuum you might have a bad breaker.

I would unwire what you have and try wiring the the plug by itself and leave the light and switch out of the circuit. Try it like that and see if the system works. If it still blows the breaker It would seem that your receptical is bad. If not then your first wiring job was not correct.

Those little press-in sockets have been known to crack and short out internally or to the surrounding panel. Worth a little inspection/test!

Have you tried to power up the vac separately, by itself ? Maybe posssible the vac motor is burned up, causing the breaker to trip.

It's possible that you bought it cheap because something is wrong with it.
