Hello everyone I have followed this forum for quite some time. But just made an account and. Today happens to be the day I received my first car lift for my garage. My lift is 3 hp 220volts 60hertz and is recommended a 20 amp breaker. I’ve never used anything with 220volts and I’m no expert at electrical work but I know some knowledge and I’m looking for some assistance with this. I chose 220volts because I heard better results. I plan to run a new outlet from my service panel. My service panel is on the outside of my house and my lift outlet is on the other side. So I don’t think it will be to difficult.
What I think my plan is to run 10 Gauge 4 wire with a 20 amp breaker ( my thinking is thicker wire incase in the future I decide I can upgrade breaker for bigger needs).
I picked up a 4 prong outlet from Home Depot rated 125v/250v. Now my question is the wiring coming out of my lift is 3 wires. When I was doing research I thought the code changed in 1996 to require 4 wires. What do I do to change 3 wires to 4 and add a plug? This is mostly a dry run if anyone has suggestions or recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.
