wiring a plug in from a light fixture

Is it possible to add a plug in from a light fixture? I want to add a hanging shop light that comes on with the rest of the lights. Can I just tie off a light fixture for the plug?

You can open the electrical box for the light, connect a piece of the appropriate type and size wire, and run to a new box with a plug. The plug can be switched with the light.

There's a tab on outlets that you can break off so each side is fed from another source. Just in case you want to switch one side of an existing outlet, such as the one for the garage door opener. You'll see it between the brass colored screws.

This is, or was common in bedrooms where one outlet was half switched so a light could be plugged in and operated from the switch by the door.

You could replace the fixture with the one shown above, or use one of those twist-in outlet adapters. Basically just an outlet with a screw-in bulb fitting on the end. Walmart has them for cheap.

They're not the safest thing. They definitely aren't designed for high amp draw, but one light is going to use less than an amp.

OP, if you're looking for quick and easy, use one of those screw-in things. Personally, I'd do it right and remove the light, and install a box with an outlet. The wiring is already there, so all you'd have to do is remove the light, nail a plastic box on, pull the wire though, and attach it to an outlet. It would take about 15 minutes and cost less than a dollar for the box, outlet, and cover.
