Wiring A Reznor UDAS Heater

I'm currently running the wiring in my garage in anticipation of installing a Reznor UDAS-30 heater. According to the installation manual:

"A dedicated line voltage supply with disconnect switch should be run directly from the main electrical panel to the heater. All external wiring must be within approved conduit and have a minimum temperature rise rating of 60°C"

I've run a dedicated line (12-2 NM) from the sub panel to a box mounted to the rafter in the heater location. The UDAS heater has a built-in disconnect, so I think I've got the first two parts covered (dedicated line & disconnect). My question involves the wiring from the box to the unit. The instructions say to used approved conduit to the unit and have a 60C temperature rise rating. I suppose that's for heat protection for the wiring.

I know there are various types of conduit, but which types have a 60 degree C temperature rise rating? I can't seem to find any specs that mention that.

And how should the wiring from the box to the unit be handled? Should I have a metal box instead of the one I've already installed to allow a short run of EMT or other conduit from the face (front) of the box to the unit? I'm not close to installing the heater, but I'd like to have the correct box and wiring in place before the ceiling is finished.

Thanks for the help.

George

Sorry for any neck pain the sideways photo causes. For some reason GJ wants to turn all my photos.....

Any junction box is fine. There's nothing special about the electrical just because it's a heater. Put a coverplate on it with a knockout and run flex conduit to the knockout plug on the unit heater.

Thanks for the replies Sberry and Wylies. I understand. The 60 C rating is for the wire inside the conduit.

Thanks CSP. That was exactly what I was wondering about. Looks like what I've got thus far will work.

Take care,

George

Can't see it here too well...but I used a rated appliance cord to the wall plug...dedicated like you are doing. Inspector was good with that. Gas heater.

Great question; mind if I jump on and ask something similar?

I am planning on installing the REZNOR UDAS 75 and when I did my electrical I placed an outlet on a string of outlets, the last one being at 10ft for this heater install. I added a switch to be able to turn off the unit for spring and summer. Is it a requirement that it is a dedicated outlet? I have 4 LED lights some other outlets and a LED porch light on the same 12/2 20A service.

Thanks

I have a dedicated outlet for my UDAS. Actually, what I did is run a line from my generator transfer subpanel, so that if there is a power outage in the winter, I'll be able to keep the garage warm (I have water lines in the garage). If I recall, the reznor instructions wanted a dedicated outlet.

These heaters draw under 5 amp

I recall someone on here wired theirs on a dedicated 20a circuit and it wouldn't fire up?

Great idea... I missed the bus on making it a dedicated outlet. I am already insulated, rocked, painted and finished. I will just have to ensure nothing is a huge current draw on that string of outlets leading to my reznor switch and outlet at the end of the string. The LED lights draw 8W each and they would only be on if I am in the shop, so it should be easy to keep the load.

Why run a 12/2 dedicated circuit to handle only 1.9 amps?

If he's like me, why the hell not? I was running 2000ft of it anyway! I went with all 20a receptacles and breakers for the whole shop because it was about $80 more in parts and $60 more in wire for 22 circuits.

I guess the question then becomes...is he like you? Is he really running 2000 ft of wire for 22 circuits? I didn't pick that up from his post. Just saying that 12/2 wire for a "dedicated" circuit that's only has to handle 1.9 amps is overkill in my opinion.

Pretty late on this but my house is being wired right now (plan to use the same model), once the electrician is done I can snap a picture if you need it. Not sure if that will help or not...but he should be done by Friday I believe.
