Wiring a welder

I'm about ready to hook up a typical Lincoln 225 amp stick welder in my garage. It's about 25' from my circuit box in my basement.

Is it ok to use 6/3 cable for this?

What size conduit do I need for this?
I just need about 3 feet or so up the wall in the garage

Plastic or metal conduit?

You mite have to up the wire size from the calculator do to being a welder per code. Not shear on that.

If you use cable and it is not subject to physical damage you do not need conduit. This machine can be wired with number 10 or better wire. This makes it a WELDER circuit, not a general use true 50A circuit such as an appliance that has continuous use such as a pottery kiln or oven. Welder circuits are somewhat different, the use is intermittent, wire doesn't need to be as heavy. Since it is short the price of a 6 or an 8 wouldn't be prohibitive either. If this is an enclosed wall I guess I might go heavier than the minimum 10 though as later down the road someone might assume it is a 50A circuit.

BTW, there is difference between cord and cable, cords not suited for use in walls, if you can pipe it all the better, use 2 single conductors, number 10 for a ground.
