I am thinking about wiring up my garage myself.

My question is.

For the air compressor and lift, do they have to be wired direct to the breaker box, or can I install a 220 plug at the wall/ceiling to plug the lift /compressor to later.

It will be a while before the lift and compressor are added. Just trying to think ahead for the wiring of them.

The lift and compressor can be wired with plugs. If you use a ceiling mount outlet for the lift it's best to use a twist lock.

Agreed. Use twist lock plugs. In addition use twist plugs for all your 240v outlets. Saves trying to make up your mind with where you want your 240v equipment to live.
