Wiring clarification for lift motor

Wow I think my question was just answered in the one below regarding a motor wiring. I have good pics though and just need clarification.

This is a pump motor for a rotary lift.

Only three wires.

I believe both white and black should be to a 30a breaker and ground to ground. However when I did that, it tripped as soon as I hit the power button on the unit. Could it just be a bad breaker? I've double checked the connections and there isn't anything shorting out.

Is this a new motor?

You either have a short in the wiring or the motor is bad.
Not a new motor. Good info thank you. My primary goal was to make sure I had it wired correctly. I will run different wire from the breaker directly to the motor to rule out the wire bring the wall and in the attic space. If it doesn't trip, then I can focus on the motor.

Before doing that........this may be easier first..........
Disconnect the power from the lift input connections. Turn on cb. Does cb hold or trip?
Reconnect power to input of lift. Eliminate trip switch from ckt. Turn on cb. Press button. Does cb hold or trip?
Reconnect trip switch.
Disconnect motor from controller. Turn on cb. Press button. Does cb hold or trip?

Measure voltages along the way.

Also check resistance to grd .

I don't see actual wiring for a trip switch. The schematic seems to have it with the jbox shown in top right of dwg. Does one exist?

Are you sure the part that looks like a big relay is wired correctly?

On my rotary lift, definitely an older model than yours, the power comes in up high on the post at the limit switch junction box as shown in the diagram above not at the motor. Also in that diagram be aware that the incoming white wire is carrying power not a common wire as normally used.

On the lift switch the brown and yellow are under the same termial. Brown wires normally go to a capacitor. Diagram on motor doesn't show a brown wire. If there is not two browns going to a capacitor one of the power wires more than likely it would be the blue. So probably a dead short across a motor winding. Smell the motor it might smell burnt.

Sorry for the delay getting back to this topic....it's amazing how everything else needs your time.

Ok, so what I did first was remove the safety switch connection from the wiring and went straight to the motor to rule the motor out. When I turned on the breaker, the motor started running and the lift worked as it should. When I went over and hit the switch, it did not shut off so I had to turn it off at the breaker. My understanding is that it should be a dead mans switch....push in to raise and when you let go it shuts off. I rewired the safety switch back into the loop and it does the same thing. The good news is, I must've had a short somewhere (earlier in my post) that was causing the breaker to pop. The bad news is that the switch still doesn't work.

Switches are cheap so I bought two....still does the same thing. Works from the breaker only. My only other thought at this point is the power relay pictured here. I have one on order. Thoughts?

If the motor runs with the switch disconnected, then the relay is shorted closed.

Does the overtravel switch shut off the motor when tripped?

Sounds like the relay.

Do you have a meter? Can you measure the resistance across 11 - 14 and 21 - 24?
