At my electricians suggestion, I ran 8/3 wire to hook up my 220V Lincoln Arc welder. I bought a surface mount receptable for it and was getting ready to hook it up and noticed there are only 3 connections on it and one of them is a ground. My wiring is red, white, black and ground. Can one of you electrician types tell me how to connect to this receptacle - obviously, I'm less than a novice...

Don't use the white wire in your 8/3, tape the end of it or throw a wirenut on it. You want blk/red/bare to your recep.

the white( neutral) is not required in this application because you only need 240v, not 240 and 120. Put a wire nut on it and tuck it back into the box.

The ground connection is probably marked green and should be the semi-circular shaped hole in the plug, while the two hots are the slots, and are interchangable red or green.

Probably a good idea to get your electrician friend back to guide you through the hookup to the panel. Electricity isnt very forgiving.

.

Pretty sure you meant the hots are interchangable red or black. Green or bare is ground.

I hooked up my Lincoln 225 welder using 6/3 and put a wirenut on the white inside the receptacle box but I did land the other end on the neutral bar in the panel since I don't like loose ends.

Typo above. Last line should be red or BLACK.

Green is ground as stated in the first line.
