Hi fellas. Just checking on something.

I have a 1971 raised ranch with the attatched 2 car garage on the lower right of the house. My brother in law is an electrician and put in a new square d QO main panel for me to replace the old cutler hammer from 1971. It was old and had no spots left for more breakers.
I also had him run a 100 amp service to a subpanel in the garage. It’s been a godsend. I now have a 240 heater, compressor, and welder/plasma cutter in the garage. It’s my mancave/garage.

I need to run electric service to a pool i will install in a few weeks. I don’t see a need for more than one 120v, 20a gfci outlet. I plan to run 12g thhn in conduit from the subpanel in the garage to an Lb, exiting the house and underground 18” to where the 4x4 post will be. I guess the total wire length will be around 60’.

I imagine the load will be around a few amps. A voltage drop calculator shows an approx voltage drop of 2 volts at that distance assuming a few amp load. I think it’s a 1hp motor running an above ground pool. Nothing crazy.

First please, is 12g enough, or shall i step it up to 10g? It will be a 20a outlet on a 20a breaker.

Secondly please, do i need to wire the conductors differently in the subpanel, as the electric is leaving the subpanel from the residence to outside?

Thanks

(PS, Don’t want the pool, girlfriends sister is giving it to us for free and girlfriend “wants a pool”. Only cost is the install and the new liner, i told her if it isn’t used often, it’s going to get recycled”. We will see!)

Check with your inspector. Last inspection I did on a pool required 2 circuits. One for the pump and one convenience. Could not be on the same breaker. This is a few years ago so things do change but that is one area that really should be inspected and recorded in public records. It also specified distances in detail. Worth the $.

I would go 10ga. You can buy direct burial for 120v service. Use plastic conduit where it exits the building and goes up the 4x4 post for the outlet to protect from grass trimmers & rodents.

"free" pool.

hahahahahahahahahaha

You plan sounds fine. PVC shc 40 should be OK (assuming no special exposures to mechanical trauma). #12 for the pump is good, you could run a second set of wires for an outlet or two, lights/receptacle/etc. How is the pump supposed to be wired? Is it direct wire or plug in? Timer on it?
