Wiring for this blower fan motor please.

Being a pack rat and "picker" as my significant other calls me, I picked up this squirrel cage fan a few years back. At the time it had the wiring diagram on it. It no longer does. I could use some help as to what each wires function is.

I've added a heating coil to the wood fired Taylor hot water heater for the shop and plan on building a housing and ductwork for it.

I'm 99.9% sure it 240v. I'm unsure of the amperage draw. I tried looking on the motor and didn't see a name/data plate and I really do not want to disassemble it to find out. But I guess I may have to. I want to size my wiring correctly for the load. I'm guessing it's either a 1/2hp or 3/4hp motor. If I can figure out the wiring for it to run using temporary wiring for testing, I can take am Amp reading to size the circuit.

You probably should try to see the rating plate. But looking at it I would guess at 240V as well, Orange being L1 and then the other lead will be L2, Black for high, Blue for medium high, yellow for medium low and Red for low. I could have the blue and yellow switched. Black is usually high and red is usually low. Unused leads get taped off.

It does appear black, red, orange and yellow are used, the other one is already taped off.

From looking at the wire size, the Amp load shouldn't be very high. Do you have any idea what I might be able to "salvage" a method or switch from to control the speed from? I may look around the shop to see what types of switches I have. I know I have a bunch of 3PDT 120v coil relays and bases, and some 2PST momentary rocker switches. I'll have to see what jumps out of the "parts bin."

I'll give it a shot later today. i

I think you should try to see the rating plate, it will have amps, volts, hp and (usually) a wiring diagram. Generic multispeed fan motor wiring is typically one lead as common and the rest are the different speeds. I see the orange is wired to one side of the capacitor and the fan motor, this what makes me think it is common. In Canada we have Princess Auto, similar to Harbor Freight, they carry multispeed fan switches. You have to be sure of the current rating of the switch will handle the motor before using it. What ever method you use to change speeds, be absolutely sure you don't power two speeds at the same time, it will burn up the windings. Relays work but are limited to two speeds NO and NC without getting a bit complex for wiring fan speeds.

the group here is pretty accurate. Its seems to be a 3 speed motor. Heat/ac blower. Hard to tell , but Orange is L1 it has the cap. Black is usually hi speed (cool) L2. All manufacturer's arent all consistent. Im a R&D Design Engineer for a Leading HVAC corp by day. Attaboy Dave (hint)

If all you are concerned about is wiring size....

1HP on 240 volt will run close to 5 amps, 3/4HP will be less 3-4 amps. Double these numbers for 120 volt, or 10 amps for 1HP or 7-8 for 3/4HP.
If a 240 volt motor 14 gauge on wither HP will be fine. 3/4HP on 120 volt you might go to 12 gauge.
