Wiring for TV in Garage

Hi all:

What’s the best and simplest way to wire up a TV in the garage? I have a cable box in the living room and don’t want to rent another box. I can, however, run HDMI, signal repeater, etc cables as the walls are open for another week before drywall is installed.

Or is it time to sign up for Hulu, YouTube TV etc?

I have been out of the AV game and appreciate the help. Thanks!

So there's a fair bit of upfront cost to buy a TiVo, but then you own it, and you only have to pay a token monthly fee, if any, for a CableCARD, instead of cable box rental fees. And it can be fun getting the cable company to turn it on properly.

But it is better than the cable company box. And cheaper long term.

And you can buy a "mini" unit for your shop that connects to the main TiVo over Ethernet. It uses the tuners in your main TiVo, so no "extra TV" fees from the cable company. And it gives you full access to all channels and recordings.

It's not for everyone, but depending on what you want it may be a good choice.

All you need is to wire for power, buy a Sony smart tv (It is Android based)or an Android streaming box, Download the Kodi app, put the Xanax build or any other build on (very easy to do) You can watch any tv show, any movie, any live tv for absolutely free, just need 50mb or better internet. I have used Kodi for 7 years, never paid for any service ever.

What are the newest kodi programs that are good for streaming? I haven't used kodi since before showbox got shutdown. Xanax?

Those cable boxes usually have multiple outputs...if not install a splitter and run one line out to shop.

Run some Cat 5/6, coax to either an attic / outside antenna or to the street connection, and HDMI if you want it while the walls are open.

You can always use a wireless method, and it is easy, but, you may find that you prefer the better connection that you get with the hard wired connection. You don't have to use it but it will always be an option if you place the wire now. The cabling isn't expensive.

I just added a HD antenna. It picks up most of the football games.

My son in law set it up with his Roku account (or whatever the hell it's called), but I don't use it.

I've been considering a HD antenna for local channels and streaming everything else. I stream everything now except local channels. We have u-verse and I use that to stream Roku. I would need to get an internet provider and set up my wi-fi network if I dropped u-verse but that wouldn't be a big deal. Hell I could probably just switch from u-verse to ATT net.

Your cable company may have an app for a smart tv, Roku, etc that will let you watch the same channels you get on the cable box.

^^^^^^^^^^This.........choose an add on devices or smart TV, use an APP either way, the cable APP especially since he has cable .........

YouTube TV is just another bill $$

HDMI a splitter is not a good choice to send the TV to anther building.

Just buy an inexpensive smart tv , dump cable, and go with a streaming service.

We use YouTube tv, but there are others out there.

Ok. Do I need cables of any sort to use smart tv or app?

I will likely run coax, Ethernet and HDMI in the wall just as backup.

Thanks all.

it depends on how good your wifi is out there. I stream via wifi in my shop and its' working fine. You can use your phone to run a speed check. I have an app on my phone called "speed check" but I'm sure there are lots more, and there are websites also that support speed checking.

I have my house wired with at least 2 cat5/6 cables to each tv. I use a hdmi matrix switch that has IR.(monoprice blackbird https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=34096) I have one receiver in a closet that everything runs to, I can control it from any of the rooms that have a tv.

they sell single ones to control just one device, would be all you need. https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24281

I also just screen mirror airplay to my tv as most smart tvs have this built in now. Probably can do the same with any cable provider that has an app. Also most networks have apps that you log into with your cable provider info and can do the same.

I finally put a 22" (I have limited space) TV in the garage that I had been saving for just that purpose. Thought about all the above ideas many times. When I found out my new Fios boxes only need power and wifi, I did it. I can live with the $6.00/month box fee to have the same programming in the garage as in the house.

My TV and ROKU in the garage was pretty nice last weekend when I was doing a project I'd never done before and was able to Youtube my way through it on an actual TV and not my phone. Just sayin' . . . .

I use the TV in the garage for background noise. Bought an HD antenna which works well for that. Don't need the channel selection from in the house, but understand everyone is different. This is what works for me.

The Apple TV was an automatic upgrade to HD service, which would have cost me $10/month thru cable TV. I use Hulu Plus for my service, can get any football game, when football is played....

TV in the garage is great when I work on my vehicles or projects. We have decent wifi through Xfinity and the garage is relatively close to the router, so no signal issue. I use a roku out there and it gives full Xfinity functionality including live tv, anything recorded and On Demand. Check online and you may have similar options. Good luck!
