I just bought a led flood light with motion to put inside the garage & I've wired an extension cord so I can plug it next to the garage door opener. It trips the plug without the gfci button but works well with the plug having the button (same circut). Ive also toned the cord so the fat prong is common.
questions;
I've connected the green & white since the chord is 2 poles, is this ok?
Why is it tripping?

the green is ground, the white is 120 AC neutral, and the color is the actual voltage you need for the light. You want the neutral and the phase (white and color) attached to the correct flat blade prongs. The green will go to the round pin and is ground.

Please be careful and either get a book or a diagram from the internet on basic AC wiring. This mistake should not be plugged in to any outlet, until it is corrected.

I noticed on the power panel that the ground & common buses are attached to the same metal bar. Why isn't it advised to connect the green to the white at the fixture??? Thanks for the responce

Neutral and ground should only be bonded at the man service panel.

Past that u can have neutral current flowing on ground objects.

The reason the GFCI is tripping is most likely due to u connecting neutral and ground together
