Wiring questions

Ill be running 6/3 from my sub panel in the basement into the garage. Depending on where I can punch through the wall, I might have a straight shot along the inside of the garage wall.

1 This wire will be run in some type of conduit. Should I use grey plastic, conduit or flexible?

2 This will go to a disconnect in a 4" box and from there to a junction box. In this last box, the compressor wiring will come in and get hard wired. I will have enough 6/3 romex to run from the disconnect box to the junction box. This will be about 12" from the disconnect box. Any issues running 6/3 here and just capping off 1 wire on each end?

3 How to wire the compressor to the junction box? I can get 10/3 SOOW cord from home depot. Should this be run in the flexible conduit from compressor to the junction box for final connection? Or just run the 10/3 SOOW cord directly to the box?

4 Should I run 10/3 SOOW 600v cord or 10/3 SJOOW 300v from the compressor to the final connection in the junction box? From compressor to j box will be 6 feet max.

I bel having an electrician do shall the final connections but I want too do as much of the grunt work myself. Thanks for the help.

Run the largest conduit you can from the sub panel. If the sub panel is surface mounted you can come out a side with an LB then through the concrete. The larger conduit will allow you to pull more circuits in in the future. Gray pvc is the proper conduit to run. Use a large disconnect box in the garage. This will allow you to shut power off near the compressor and act as protection for the wiring.
View media item 11639If your positioning the compressor within a few feet of the garage panel use metal flex conduit to make the connection. Talk to the electrical contractor before you start for proper wiring sizes. Tell him what your thinking about and he may have an easier way to accomplish the job.

You may be calling your wire by the wrong numbers. First why do you need 10/3 romex for a compressor? 10/3 romex is 3 current carrying wires plus a ground wire. 10/3 SO cord is 2 current carrying wires plus a ground wire. In cord the ground is counted where in romex it is not counted. So you would need 10/2 romex and 10/3 SO cord.

If you take a close look 10/3 was only mentioned with SO cord. Romex was stated to be 6/3 with 1 unused in the current setup but this gives me the flexibility in the future to have a sub panel in the garage. I got s great deal on the 6/3 romex from home depot. IT was 49.50 cheaper than lowes.

Thanks for the help.

Due to needing a location change of the outlet, I'll be running 6/3 from the sub panel through the joists and into the garage. Right as it emerges, I'll put a j box and then run 3 strands of 6 gauge wire in 3/4" flexible housing to the disconnect them to the final 6-50 outlet. Home depot had 6/3 SOO cord do that with a plug on the end will make the final connection to the compressor.

Thanks the help guys.
