Is it ok to run wiring, 12-2 romex, in the 1.5" space between the metal siding and the stud wall? I would probably cable tie them to the studs and staple to the 24 lath board then cut the cable tie after spray foam. I originally planned to just drill holes but wondered about this as an option. I'm also wondering what size/type of wire to run from the meter loop main combo on the pole to the panel at the shop if anyone knows. The run from the pole is about 200'. I'm in Benton County AR and this does have to be inspected.

You need to run this by your inspector. I don't see an issue with it, but many will say it is too close to the metal and someone could screw or nail thru the metal and hit it. On studs the code requires the wire be at least 1½" (?) from the wall surface or be protected by metal protective plates.

The cable needs to be held back at least 1 1/4" from the nailing face of the studs or strapping. As Charles said you'd better run it by the inspector.

I would just drill the holes, might be 30 minutes extra time and don't have to worry about staples or strapping wires

Yeah, I think I'll just drill holes to run the wire. So, another big question is on wire size to from the pole mounted meter and main disconnect for its own 200 amp service. I was planning on using 4/0 aluminum wire for this run, but with it being about 205 feet from the pole, I was wondering if I should maybe step that up a few sizes? I plugged the numbers into a voltage drop calculator and it came to between 500 and 1000 size wire, but I'm not sure if I should be using 200 amps for the load or a more realistic number. Does anyone know what I should go by for calculating the size of the wire? If I can go with the 4/0 wire, I wonder if I can use a 2/0 neutral and a #4 ground from the main disconnect panel to the sub panel in the garage using mobile home feeder cable. That seems to be the cheapest route, but I'm not sure if I can use a smaller neutral or not. Has anyone ran this long of a run to their garage with 200 amp service?

Oh yeah, the feeder wire will be in underground conduit from the pole to the garage.
