Wiring recessed lights in house

What is the best (proper) way to run the romex in the attic for the cans? Drill the ceiling joists or run a 2x board across them and staple the romex to it? Thinking that the romex stapled to a cross board would allow it to get air- probably overkill.
Not looking for the easiest / quickest, but the best, neatest way.
Area is aprox 10' away from the attic crawl access hole.

Being that the romex is 10ft from access hole you can run it across the tops of the ceiling joist. If closer than 6 or 7 feet to an access hole or stairs (can't remember the exact distance) then the romex needs to follow running boards.

I can't offer pro advice, but one thing I would look into is any original wiring in the same area, and how it is run.

For re-sale value, it will help to keep it looking original, as opposed to loose wire, or even a piece of lumber with wire stapled to it.
