Retainer spring inside below the ball is broken or appears to be missing somehow.

Any idea how to make it usable, instead of throwing it away ?

I cut that end off, chamfer it, and keep it for a drive punch. Buy another extension.

Ideally done with drill press and a cobalt drill bit.
Drill a 2.5mm hole on the opposite side where the ball protrudes. Hook out the pieces of the broken spring. Replace spring by winding it through the hole.

Powerbuilt tools are a brand of Alltrade tools. Maybe you can find a retail outlet somewhere near you that handles Alltrade where you can warranty it. If not, it probably isn't worth it to pursue it like you said.

Thanks everyone for your input.
I tried Amazon for warranty claim, but it didn't get anywhere.
I might drill out the hole and see what's inside and maybe cut off the head, just for fun.

But it strikes home that a small ball/spring can make a whole tool useless.
