I managed to make it without so much repetition in metric. I don't have 3/8 impact and use all 1/2. Not underhood of cars 40 hrs a week so some ease and time gain would be minor, small modern gun with good socket selection, long and short and a universal and a couple swivel sockets for special cases. I can get it done.
I got a set of universals come with 3/8 stuff back in the Sears sets, I lost one and finally relaced it at 10$ from the Sears store, oh well but needed it and they stocked it. There is probably better stuff but I don't use it 24/7 but used a dozen simple combo today, cant remember last time I used anything more complex.
I got 20 various 9'16 sockets a few the same but 3 or 4 in the super common flavors and while I need a 12 mm I don't need 6 of each everyone they ever invent. I bought a few extra 13 here and there. I got a dozen SK and a few proto tossed in the small sizes we use a lot. Own 3 or 4 1/2 deep 3/8 in chrome, a couple 6 pt and a couple 12, same for 9/16. Couple portable sets of each, if I find myself looking for 1 I buy them.
I need to buy 3 new razor knives, enough they quit being gobbled up. I bought 2 new diagonals, need another set of wire strippers or 2. I got a few pieces simply dull. Its easy to get 2 of something where there should be 1.

My vote is for short-medium size.

1/4 x 4 inch
3/8 x 6 inch

and also +1 on some good 1/4 universal sockets.

It isn't being thrifty but economical, I cant buy anymore tools to make it easier or faster. If I could I would. A fist full of rubber bungee cords I can use. They are like the razor knives and tape measures. Need to replenish a few. I use a dozen 5/16 nut drivers and same for 7/16, every once in a while we lose one or wear it out.

I have several but agree, if you're only going to get one, get a short one and add it to a regular extension if you need longer.

I would personally stay away from the harbor freight wobbles. I bought a set and have had the wobble end break off most of them. Havent had any issue out of the regular extensions from there, which is what lead me to buy them.

If it was $105 for 2 lengths in each of the 3 drive sizes I would have. At this point I'm thinking I could get a short and a long in all 3 drives for under $100 used but in very good condition.

Thanks again for everyone chiming in. I'm sure most of the brand recommendations would be fine for what limited use I will give them.

Mainly though its interesting to see that it's about a split decision on short vs. medium vs. long. I'm thinking an 11" for when you want to turn a fastener from a distance and a 1.5" - 2" that I can use solo or paired with any other extension for specific length.

Is it a split decision , or is it an almost unanimous 'Why would you just have one'?

I have maybe $20 in the half dozen 3/8 wobbles in my work rig. One of them is snap on, and I don't seek it out, but don't look for another if it comes up first. It does have a slightly more slender shaft than the PT ones.
