Hi all,

Been a while since i posted here, thats what having a baby does...!
I'm looking at restoring a metal woden woodworking vice, does anyone know the best blue colour (automotive paint) to use to get the best match to original?

Many thanks

Record and Woden vices are essentially the same. I have redone several Records and one Woden and have used Valspar aerosol paint which I get at Lowe's. I bought a Record No. 4 new in the mid 70's and was able to match the original paint. In my opinion the shade of blue is the same.

Here is a Woden No. 1 next to a Record No. 8 ...

Here is a Record No. 4. The front has been resprayed with Valspar Blue while the rear is the original paint ...

This is the above Woden No. 1 after being restored ...

Which Woden vice do you have (No.?)? They are great vices!

I found my Woden vice and it has the logo still.
One might easily take the image and make a water slide decal to finish off the nice restoration you have done.
Of course the stickers are not perfect but it might be a start

Just cleaned it up, and between the swivel base was original unfaded paint. I can say that the paint job above is so very very close that I would think it a match for the original color

Just to clarify terms -

* a “vice” is a bad habit or behavior

* a “vise” holds a workpiece

In this thread, the subject is a Woden Vice, made in the UK where the same spelling (vice) is used for both meanings.

"Vises" are usually American, though Parkinson, another British maker of vices, also used the "vise" spelling.

Australia and pretty much everywhere but North America that English is spoken seem to use "vice".

I'm not sure when/where/why the difference in the spelling originated. Can anyone enlighten me?

Woden used several different colours on their vices. Older ones seemed to be red or green, as (surprisingly) shown in this colour catalogue from 1924. I saw a Woden vice once in a pale green that I assumed was an old repaint, but might not have been.

I have a small Woden vice purchased new by my Grandfather in the 1930’s and it’s a much darker green. I’ve seen woodworking vices, and other tools, finished in a bright green.

The blue vices seem to be newer. I’ve seen many that I’m sure are original, and it’s a slightly brighter shade of blue than the British Standard “Roundel Blue” used by record, but as you say, very close.

Repro decal’s are available from www.isaydingdong.co.uk and look decent.

Thank you for the nice catalog and links to the decals. I think the guy does a smashing job. And I know, in American I should say bang up job. Pointing up.
