Wood burning fire place distance from a/c return

Not a garage related question but I figured this would be a good place to ask.

The wife and I are designing our new home and would like to include a fireplace in the living room. I am thinking a zero clearance wood burning unit would be best due to space and cost.

The issue is with the A/C return. Is there a minimum distance the fire place should be from the return vent?

The a/c will be in a closet that is in a hall way around the corner from where the fire place will be.

Thanks for the help.

To be completely sure you'll have to check the code.
I know our wood fireplace doesn't draft the best when first starting so I wouldn't want a return too close to grab any smoke not headed up the chimney. Otherwise I don't see any reason why it couldn't be near the fireplace.

I believe NFPA code is 10 foot minimum between any return and a solid fuel burning appliance but don't quote me on that. Please verify with your local code inspection office.

This is being built in an unincorporated area of the county with no code/inspections.

I guess by default the NFPA life safety code is applicable even though it won't be inspected. I'll research more on it. Thanks y'all.

On a factory built fireplace NFPA 211 should default to the listing. What part of the country are you in? If I was putting in a wood fireplace, I would probably go with an RSF energy Opal. Unless I lived in the deep south.

10' horizontal as said above to the return. The idea is that you don't **** up products of combustion (the poisons) and quickly distribute them through the house via the HVAC system.

Plus you don't want a noisy return grille in your living room.

I live in central Texas. This thing probably won't get used all that much. Nice option to have though.
