Wood floor on concrete

Looking into wood floors to go in a section of the house that is on slab.

I really wanted solid wood, but see that it is recommended to put down plywood or sleepers first to keep it off the concrete. The 3/4" wood is already pushing it for the flooring height, so adding a subfloor won't work.

Is there a good quality laminate solution?

Is there a porcelain that looks real enough?

Engineered wood flooring can be applied directly to concrete. Moisture control is critical though. Make sure the exterior drainage is tip-top before proceeding.

If you *really* want solid wood as opposed to engineered, Bruce makes a a 5/16 solid called "Natural Reflections". Personally, I like the engineered product better than any solid wood, 5/16 or 3/4.

We've had engineered wood flooring (teak) on our slab for 10 years now. The top side, that you see & walk on, is wood. The engineered part is the bottom that you glue to the slab. The wood is thick enough that you could sand & refinish it at least once, & probably twice, although I doubt it'll ever be necessary.

We also have a laminate floor on the slab in my wife's "art" room. It appears to be wearing as well, but has the "hollow" sound of floors that aren't glued down.

They make a new vynil style glue down floor it is similar to Pergo but it is color all the way through 12mm thick and some of them are 5 ft. water can't hurt it etc. It looks very good and there are hundreds of choices. Might be worth looking into.

I think I saw some vinyl tiles that look like wood flooring and they just stick down to the floor. The tiles should stick to plywood without a problem, not so sure about sticking to concrete though. This MAY be an option for you.
