Anyone ever install a wood furnace in their garage/shop ? Can you even do that anymore ? I want to buy a summers heat 3000 I have 8" double wall stainless pipe already to go through the ceiling and outside and would line the corner with fireproof cement board. Any advise is helpful thanks

I would recommend a call to your insurance agent before you go any further. I know some have trouble getting insurance with a wood stove , but a wood furnace may be different?

First, stop calling it a garage. Fire code prohibits a solid fuel burner in a garage. Call it a shop. My shop has three 12x12 overhead doors and a slab. I got a permit, inspections, and have a legally installed woodstove in that shop. I had to switch insurance companies to one that had no problem with solid fuel burning in an "outbuilding". State Farm lost my business after 20 claim free years because of this.

Now, wood heat is harder than fossil fuel. You have to go into the cold shop and start a fire, then you are warm right next to it. After a while the whole shop is warm but by then you might have already finished your work.

I just love burning stuff.

I asked my insurance company about a wood stove and/or coal in my shop -- no problem as long as properly installed. My place in PA is close to coal country

Do they not know the difference between a garage and shop ? And mine would be a furnace so I feel it's a little safer than a wood stove and plus the good pipe going up is better than single wall

Ha! They don't and you don't either. Don't call it a garage since that is in direct conflict with the fire code. ALL solid fuel burners.

Properly installed is another one of those squishy terms but usually means per the manual. The manual does not require a professional installation.
