Oh a topic that is dear to my heart...

Tons of you tube videos but...Stop by the nearest woodworking store in your area and inquire about taking a class. the following link should locate one in your area.

If they do not offer you a class , I am sure they will have lots of books and videos for you to look at (the store I use has them).

Wood lathes are a ton of funLook on Utube for ideas on the turnings that people make.
Look on CL, offfer up, etc and see what you can bu used.
You can spot a lot of learning even on a older used one.
I often see the lower end wood lathes for $100 or less for sale
One of the things on a wood lathe is weight. Adding weight to the base always makes a machine feel better and reduces vibrations

I recommend you start with using scrap wood, fire wood, pine just to get a feel for stuff.
Then move on from there.

Look for a member close by that may let you use his machine and show you what to do

When I worked at Rockler I gave demos and tutorials on how to use the wood lathe. A little hands on time with an expert will really shorten your learning curve. Look for a good woodworking store or woodworking club nearby. Good luck making shavings.

That's great news! A class is a good place to learn technique and find out what you like in a machine. Talk to turners and most will tell you stories of how many lathes they have had. Most of us have had a few. Lathes are like partners--you usually don't match up permanently with the first one you meet.
