Wood Lathe Work Needed

Hello All,

My daughter has asked me to build a replica of a wooden war hammer used by an anime character for her to use when she goes to a convention in about two months. I am not that much of a wood worker metal yes but wood no lol.

I have some of the pieces I purchased and another is being made by a friend who carves . The problem I am having is the haft is very decorative:



I have the main body, and going to order some wood curtain road pieces that will help make the hammer face, a friend is carving the horn , the ball on the end of the haft I can order. The center piece and the piece where the haft joints the head is where I am running into a brick wall on how to make and pass the rules of the convention ie no metal etc.

If someone is interested in turning the pieces or the haft for me and we can come to an agreement on a price that would be awesome. Please PM me .

The O.A.L from ball end to the bottom of the hammer is about 42 " the weapon changes size in the anime and manga depending on who is drawing it I think lol. My daughter is short anyhow so it has to made so she can walk around with it slung.

What's the Morse on your spindle? Just get a 4 by driver and use a live center, get some tools from HF and cover the ways with some old towels.

What's the Morse on your spindle? Just get a 4 by driver and use a live center, get some tools from HF and cover the ways with some old towels.

Number 2 however my metal lathe is only 36" bed and the shaft is to large to go through the headstock. If need be I will do it no idea how to turn wood so it would be interesting if not down right entertaining maybe I will set up a cam lol.

Do the handle in two pieces and thread them together with some threaded rod or something? It might be a lot easier to store/travel with if it was shorter.

That would be my suggestion - bore the ends of the raw stock for a good size dowel - maybe 1/2" - then turn the pieces separately. I have a lamp from the way-way back that is nearly 4' tall, it was turned in 4 sections.

It's a fake hammer... I'd just use epoxy and glue the two halves together and not even bother with the pin

I do appreciate the suggestions but not looking to buy any tooling for a one off thing. I have to many hobbies already, and me and wood are not really on the best of terms lol . I had hoped some of the wood worker types might be interested and making a little tool / beer money.

Perhaps you could fine someone local to loan you some machine time.

I could do the work for you, but the problem is time on my end

How about you visit the local craft and hobby stores. You might be able to find premodern wood shapes that you could drill and put together to make the handle for the hammer.
Drill, put allthread and glue through the pieces, done

I have a wood lathe that I rarely ever use. Wood turning isn't something I normally do, but every once in awhile I need to make something so I get it out and set it up. I anchor it to my workbench and when i am finished with it I put it back upstairs in my garage. I haven't used it in about 4 years now and I doubt I will need it anytime soon. Last time I used it I had to make a table leg.

There are active wood turning clubs in most major metro areas that have many members that have the tools, and about half the members with the readily available time. Check in with a hardwood dealer or woodworking specialty store near you for a club referral. For example, here in the DFW area there are three clubs and I know they each could provide a list of contacts that could do that job.

Most of that could be faked up with curtain rod finials,wood dowel and drawer pulls. Parts that can't could be sculpted from wood epoxy repair putty. Just wear some surgical gloves when you kneed and work with it. Otherwise you'll be scrubbing your hands raw to clean them.
The other option is to get some EVA foam and carve it with an electric knife. Might be a lot safer for a kid. There are a lot of cosplay people with websites out there.
I'm not one of them.

Yeah I found this out lol hell she is only 5'4" so .. it is being scaled :} Design changes too the horn is round most of the time other times squared the designs on the head and handle change etc .

Yep been trying to piece it together seems some one took pity on a metal person trying to play with wood lol .

Your a good dad. I asked my dad to make a me a Star Trek phaser when I was a kid. He came home from work with a chunk of mahogany shaped into a phaser. It was the coolest thing.

Okay, first sentence is copied above. I asked when this needs to be completed by. That sentence does not answer my question. I didn't know if she needed to practice with it or if there were any other deadlines.

I want to give a big THANK YOU to @77Birdman He did an awesome Job replicating the hammer on his lathe for me! He would not accept payment though :{ He has an AWESOME garage /shop going up I hope he posts pictures when it is completed.
Here it is test fitted and head roughed out


The horn was also completed today by a boss of mine :


I will be getting it tomorrow and doing dry fit and finishing the hammer head itself.
