Made some stuff out of scrap for a garlic theme for a festival application, I hate throwing away shorts after projects so when the pile gets high I try to make something

Nice work, my shop is next door to a cabinet shop and I use all the Oak pieces for fire starter.

That's a shame. My FIL digs through the bin at a spiral stair manufacturer in Cleveland area for oak and cherry scraps. He builds wooden cars, trucks, fire engines for church auctions.

I do end up burning some for heat when it gets to be too much but I would rather give it away or utilize it, after some jobs there can be quite a lot generated.

Nice work- how thick are the inlays and what sort of finish did you use?

Inlays are about 3/8 thick. Finish is just canola oil, been using it on my cutting boards for ten years.

Food grade mineral oil is a good choice too. For some of my bowls I use 3 parts oil and one part beeswax melt it in a double boiler mix real good and pour into a container, has the consistency of paste wax easy to rub on and buff to a low luster.

Those are some thick inlays! I've only ever made 1 or 2 cutting boards in my life, but I seem to remember using the mineral oil.
The only inlays I've ever done were on this little triangle shaped table I made. They were only 1/8" thick, and no fun cutting into the base as I remember.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1433898360.157365.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1433898388.958173.jpg

My daughter works at the Childrens Hospital of Detroit Foundation. They have a gentleman there who make wooden toys and donates them for various events and things. They are really neat. She said they really can brighten up a childs life. To all of you who donate things like this, thanks. My son spent many, many nights in the hospital due to 3 kidney transplants before age 15 and the little gifts meant a lot to him and his parents when things were not going well. (He is 31 now and doing very well, of course his career is hiring nurses for a hospital, go figure)

OK, ready for a dumb question?

How do you get the inside rounded bowl shape on irregular shaped things like the ones you posted above?

Simple, CNC router, though ramped templates can be used like I did for stuff like this before I got cnc 12 years ago.

Makes sense now, thanks. I was thinking how long it would take me with my standard power tools to create that look.

Great job and thanks for sharing.

Thanks fixed it, spelling is not my strong point not a good typist either

Don't worry, if you're ever not sure of the spelling or use of a word, make a post on here and you'll be corrected within 4-6 minutes.

Very nice work. How long have you been woodworking?
