Wood siding on interior walls

I'm in the planning stages of building an unattached garage for a couple of my toys. The outside is going to have the carriage house look to blend in with the house we are restoring. To make the inside match the overall look I want to go with some form of stained wood siding on the inside.

My question is this.. I know the wood siding wont have the benefit of a fire rating like drywall but would there be an advantage to drywall and then hang the wood siding over that, or would it just be a waste?

There may be rules against just wood on the inside due to fire ratings - best to check with the AHJ on that.

Where I am they said no problem for an detached garage so I am planning T1-11 and plywood on the inside. A drywall layer will give you more fire resistance for the structure.

Typically there is no code for this with a detached with no living space.

Typically -- even when I do wood inside -- I drywall under it -- but, for an outbuilding I don't see the benefit with proper insulation and air sealing. Drywall does help to air seal when used in a fiberglass insulated building .. so that's something to think about.

Thanks for the replys. Yeah, theres no rule for a detached where I am at, I was just wondering if the there was an advantage to doing drywall under the wood.

Thanks

It sounds like it won't apply to the original poster, but in some locations there may be rules requiring a fire barrier if the building is within a certain distance of the property line (to protect the neighbor's property.)

I put up ply and did not use anything under it. However I used zip on the whole exterior under the shingles and claps. Used roxul for insulation so no vapor barrier. Basically no air movement. Only reason for double layer is fire code. Not in my area apparently. Note might help install if there is more structure to attach to instead of just studs. Depends on material length.
