Wood storage in pole barn

When I built my 40x60 barn last year, due to a change in how I was building it mid-build, I ended up with about twenty 2x12x16' boards leftover. They've been sitting on the floor for the past year and I really have got to them up off the floor and stored properly so I can have that space back. We're reorganizing that side of the shop and my tool boxes will go in their place. Can you guys suggest how to store these boards? I'm looking to build a rack or something to get them up out of my way. Their length is what's hurting me the most here.

I was thinking an aframe standalone but I'm afraid that with 16' boards on it will be more in the way to me.

Do you have a planned use for them?

Storing that much wood you might never use might not be a good idea?

Return to lumber yard?
Craigslist?
Do the project you are saving them for?

Funny you should ask. I was just b#tching to a coworker about them and he asked the same question. I have no intended use for them, but I just know that if I cut them down or let them go I'll find a use for them after that. I may just bite the bullet and let them go as 16'ers to someone who can use them. Man, that is so hard for me to do...

Also, lumber yard doesn't take returns this far out.

Is the barn finished and insulated?

If not, screw them to the barn support columns like they were siding. If you need them, unscrew them. Until then, they'll make a nice flat wall.

I have ~500 board feet of birch t&g paneling I had milled from trees I harvested. Plans changed, and it was taking up valuable space.

I ended up using some scrap lumber to build a set of narrow shelves, lagged to the wall, and starting ~4’ above the floor, to store it.

It’s been there for about a year.

Last weekend my bil was looking for material to finish the ceiling of his cabin... looks like my birch found a home, and I’ll at least recover some of the cost of processing my logs.

Put some cheap shelf brackets on the wall high enough so they are above and out of your way, and pile the boards on them. If your walls are open with exposed studs, you could just nail in some short horizontal scraps of 2x4s sticking out from the studs to hold them.

2x will warp easy. Guessing when you pick them up you will see some out of wack. I had excess on my build so I made simple shelfs out of 2x6 and stored it above six feet. Got them out of the way till I need them for something

Make a long bench w shelves out of them?
Store stuff on them while also storing them?

Be nice form boards for the next build....

Agreed. That is one future use of them. I poured a 4x4 slab outside my shop for my compressor and I really wish I had poured it as a 8x10 so I could have a good sized room for other stuff with it.

Sorry for the late replies. When I viewed the updated threads, this one didn't show up bold so I figured no one was replying.

I figured I have about 1000 lbs of wood to store. I don't want all that sitting on my barns walls. That's why I'm trying to build a standalone thing.

Return, sell or donate them.

Why keep so much wood taking up space when there is no need?
It's not as if you cannot go the to store and get more when you need it.

Space costs money. Why spend it to store this relatively inexpensive wood?

I recently put up this rack. It's 16' long with 30" brackets and holds quite a bit. Easy to make if you have a table saw. Made from 2x6's, 3/4" ply, lag bolts, and glue. It can be moved as well. Everything is attached to the wall via lags.

Return to big box for store credit...even if you don't have a receipt. If the wood is in good condition, stored inside, good for another customer, I don't think you'd have an issue.

Sure. Simple cheap and effective. Mine are only temp as it was in the way. Here is one with metal loaded. Just screwed with 2.5 inch deck mate screws. Gets it out of the way

Can you store them up in the trusses?

Well, they weigh a lot and my trusses are 40' span non load bearing. I don't feel that's safe.

I'm going to just cute them down to 8' and call it a day. I can use them on the lean to I do want to build one day.

Your barn is 40 x 60, they don't all have to be stored in the same spot. Put up angle brackets in several areas like shown in the picture above, and spread them around. If they're above head height they'll be out of the way and won't block doing or storing anything below them.

Ha ha I know it is easy for me to say... I have the same problem too.

The biggest issue I would have is that 2x12 is not that handy a size for overstock. You need a special project.

If you bought your building from the local yard and explained the issue, they should at least give a store credit. Assuming they are still nice, heck even swapping for some better size selection would be good.

You have a 40x60 and no corner to stack them in?
Put them up on the lower part of your truss.
At 16 feet they will spread any weight concerns.

1000 lb hanging on most pole barn walls isnt much spread over 16 foot.

Are you ready for a new workbench? Carving horse? Mitersaw stand? Sawbuck? Light duty gantry? Rifle benchrest? Reloading bench? Base for anvil? Picnic table for pole barn beerfests?

Few things have as much potential as a bunch of 2x.

Not a perfect pic of what I have, but enough to get the idea. Nothing fancy, but it works. I always want to have extra lumber around for when I need it for something. I make it a point to always have at least 6-8) 2x4x8's in stock.

I would buy some pallet racking, and cut them down to be the shelves for the beams. Then you can use the pallet racking to store other things.

2x12 by 16 would make nice shelves!
Before I cut them I would definitely sell them!
Too bad you are too far away as I currently do have a use for them!
