Wood stove problem

The wood stove in my shop chuffs like a train and rattles the stove doors pushing smoke out of the damper nobs on the door.
To stop it you have to close them right off but then the fire smolders down.
It never used to do this before and just started last year.
My chimneys always clean, seems like some sort of air flow prob and adjusting the pipe damper makes no difference?

You have an air flow issue, are you using small dry pieces of wood? If you are the problem becomes there is so much surface area burning it is nearly impossible to get enough air to sustain complete combustion.

How tight is your shop? Did you add inulation or a vapor barrier? Is it so tight that the building can't make up the air going up the chimney? If the stove has the option of outside air that may help.

Good point, often overlooked.

That would be my guess also.

I doubt the damper is making any difference because the fire is not getting enough oxygen to burn.

What type of stove are you using ? Got a picture of it ?

Well it used to work just fine. The only thing that's changed is the 1/2 acre behind the shop used to be heavily wooded and is now clear.
The only way to stop it from pulsing is to close the door dampers off, then the fire just smolders.

stove wuff! caused by a vacuum down the chimney into the firebox. Gasses pressurize and ignite, decompressing the firebox, and wuff-wuff out the vents. Couple causes, mainly a loss of air after a forge effect in the firebox. Hot fire getting closed down quickly. Slowly close down your damper. Is your wood super dry, your building air tight, is your chimney pipe hot. A firebox will over power a cold flue, pulling available air from the least resistance. Door vents open half turn compared to say and 8" opening. Hope any of this helps.

Just a wild *** guess;

Cutting the trees adjacent removed the wind barrier to the shop and now the wind is blowing around the shop creating a negative pressure, relative to the chimney, in the shop. When you next experience this open a window on the wall the wind is blowing against, or what ever you can do to let air into the shop equalizing the pressures.

At times I have to open a window in the house to get things started in the woodstove.
