Wood stove question

Do you guys run the wood stove with the door open? (Drolet Escape)

I’m sitting here toasty in front of the fire. The stove is not running too hot. Feels great.

I know it burns wood faster. But it does heat the shop faster as well. I don’t sleep out here, yet, and don‘t need it to go all night.

Any issues with this? There’s not a big wood stove tradition in these parts.

No, the door should be closed and air inlet adjusted correctly to avoid over firing.

If it actually DOES heat the shop faster with the door open, you are doing something wrong with the door closed.

Yes, you will need to have the door open to light the fire and get it going, but closing the door will allow it to get to peak efficiency.

I also pulls significantly more warm air from the sending it up the flue to be replaced by cold air pulled from out side

I would suggest that you read the manual on your stove. They have them on their website.

The stove radiates heat, and with the door open, your body is feeling more of that radiant heat, but, unless you’re burning more wood, the stove likely isn’t heating the room faster. The door open allows more air in, and there’s more energy going up the chimney.

Heat into the room is a function of the mass of wood burned x stove efficiency. Mass goes up with an open door, but efficiency goes down.

Efficiency needs a sealed stove and an inlet air control. That is all about how many cords of wood burnt per month, or about keeping a fire going for 8-9 hours while you sleep. But, if you have plenty of wood, and you are working for shorter periods, like 3-6 hours, and you like the open door, well heck go for it. Or at least go for it while you are working close to the stove.

It burns about 25% cooler with the door open per the little stove thermometer. This thing has one adjustment. Open or closed. And yes I’ve read the manual. Did you read the question?

You effectively turned your stove to a fireplace. Some stoves (rsf) allow for that.

It's less efficient and inputs far less overall BTUs into your space.

The exterior of the stove is colder, because you are air cooling it with cold air from your room.

If it's not a Mason chimney and the stove is not rated for open door running you will want to keep a eye on flue temperatures. The stove exterior is colder because the heat is going up the chimney.
