I'm going to be building a wooden tool/utility Cary for work and was wondering if any of you have done the same? Going to be modeled after the standard 2 shelf cart approx 36 tall and the shelves will be 21x36. Would like a steel one but funds are short and I have all the material to put something together for less than $20 basically just the cost of the casters.

Good looking cart they built, put it on my to do list

I would build one for myself but it is too rich for my blood, pocket hole jigs, 3/4 plywood, big casters. Might build the one hayhauler linked if I can find some cull plywood at HD.

My thought was to enclose the middle and add doors to store stuff inside

That sounds like it would work fine, if I were you I would add a second piece of ply at the bottom of the cart so it would be a enclosed box and then cut a opening and put a little door so you could use it to store larger items and scrap wood in the bottom compartment, or use it as a drawer. Plus make the the fold up top or a drawer for the top compartment so you can get the most out of your space.

I don't have near the tools to get as fancy as the this old house one I.e. Router, pocket hole jig etc. I'll take pics of what I end up with and will post them here.

I cut by hand so not an option; would end up being real ugggggggly. Ain't nothing wrong with wood but word of advice is to put a good top on it (metal or butcher block) and shellac the body. Nick knows his woody s*it; shellac or gtfo.

Get an old bed frame and a pocket full of 1/4" nuts and bolts. It doesn't have to be welded. You can make your shelf out of 1 x 3" or 4"

If you want some drawers, might look on CL for an cheap older top or middle box and build it in under your top surface. Would have to take the top off a top box, obviously.
