This may be a tad off topic for this forumn, but I have seen wood working tools mentioned here so here goes.....

Always had an idea of making a nice custom set of bike tools. The idea was collect the nicest examples of bike tools and make a small wood traveling case for them. It would be a gift with some practical uses.

I know I can get the foam to customize the case from the sears foam liner kits. Just need some ideas or plans for the custom case. Bought or made out of wood.

Anyone give any ideas of plans or examples....

For larger boxes chek here, http://www.gerstnerusa.com/ might give you some ideals.

I once saw a kit for a Ferrari where the tools were set in velvet in inlays routed out in the wood. Every wrench had it's custom made location. You slid out the slab of wood and there they were.

I would stay away from foam for a portable tool box, especially with bike tools which don't ever resemble each other or other brands.

I'd say go with felt liners, if anything.

For a smaller box, a cantilever opening design might be nice.

IMO, I don't think it's a practical thing to carry around on a bike.. The idea of a wooden tool box sounds great if it was left home.. You may be better to select the tools you are going to include in your kit and route out the place for each.

I think a nice Tung oil type finish would look great, felt lined, with brass hinges. Something like precision tools come with

Depending on your design, you could use oak boards hinged together.
