The building cost manuals at work will show a higher cost for wood than metal. There will be less labor with steel sheeting.

It depends. I priced both and they came out pretty close, but steel was a bit cheaper and faster to build so that is the way I went. I will add though that wood has its advantages and sometimes I wish I had gone with a wooden pole barn instead. Finishing out the interior of a wooden pole barn would be easier than steel. Steel buildings typically have fewer support members to attach things like sheeting or metal electrical conduit to. If I wanted to finish out my walls in my building, I would need to frame out the inside with wood and use it to anchor insulation and dry wall. With a steel building everything gets screwed in place with self tapping screws instead of nails or plain old wood screws.

I like my building and see no need to insulate it or finish out the inside, so I am happy to leave it as is, but if I had planned to finish the inside, then wood would have been the way to go I think.

I am going to build a 40 X 60 as well and am looking at a combo of both wood and steel. A company in Ohio is called 64 Metals and no, I do not work for them.

They have steel trusses including ones that would work for guys like us that want a lift in their buildings. These trusses go over a regular pole building. As I said, I am looking into this system so if you do, too, lemme know what you think.

I think the website is 64metals.com

I put up a small pole barn using something like this. It worked pretty well, and all I had to do was rent an all terrain fork lift to get everything in place. Built the whole thing pretty much alone. Good product, compared to wood trusses, fewer metal trusses were needed although I don't think the metal trusses get you any additional height clearance over a traditional wood scissor truss they do give greater space between trusses which effectively increases your height if you place your lift right.
